2023 TIMF Korean Composers Project

memeification for 8 players (Fl., Ob., Cl., Pf. & String Quartet), 2017/23

at the 64th Warsaw Autumn (2021)

I was sitting in a cafe in Shinagawa station having breakfast and watching through the window legions of commuters were flowing silently in an orderly manner. Spontaneously I wanted to join them, so went out and walked in. It was like standing on an endless conveyor belt. Each "product" might be unique insidedespite of its impassive soulless face. A river of sealed individualities. (SukJu Na, 2018)

Internationaler Nikolaus Fheodoroff Kompositionspreis

Dom zu Maria Saal (bei Klagenfurt)

Preisträgerkonzert - Internationaler Nikolaus Fheodoroff-Kompositionspreis 2015

SukJu Na - Towards o, Sung by AuditivVokal Dresden (source: ORF)

I was given this generous opportunity by The House Concert who organized and supported my first portrait concert in the frame of their annual "Composer-Series". Had never expected to get such a huge chance so early, even in my hometown where my pieces had seldom been played actually.

The selected pieces might not the best representative of mine. I chose them, however, to display how my music had been flowed from 2008 to 2015. Especially, String Quartet No. 1 is the last piece I wrote in Korea, also the first one from which consciousness as a professional composer emerged. It was quite interesting for me as well to follow the "time-line" towards the newest piece.

The ensemble iiiiiiiii made me happy during rehearsals and the concert. Special thanks to soprano Masumi Yoshikawa who flew kindly from Japan for this event.

About The House Concert (From its homepage)
The House Concert is a small-scale music concert initiated in 2002 at a private house of Park Chang Soo, a composer/pianist and main host of The House Concert. The House Concert is remarkable for the unusual experience it offers to appreciate music not only by listening but also by feeling the vibration through wooden floors. It reduces the physical and psychological distance between the stage and the audience. Consistently making experiments on small spaces, the House Concert has held about 1,600 concerts with artists of various genres such as classical music, traditional Korean music, jazz, popular music, experimental art, puppet show, and independent film.
